One reason for the low level of high school students in math is totally wrong and twisted view that their teachers have and therefore give them. Most math teachers I know are not specialists in the field: are physical, chemical, computer and give students their own (and wrong) view of mathematics.
The next example I gave it to John, a peculiar kind and admirable (I'll talk about it.) Convincingly illustrates the difference between mathematics and other sciences:
any course in any college math professor comes into class, and without saying a word written on the blackboard:
2 +2 = ?loose chalk and see their students waiting for a response. They puzzled respond in chorus:
2 +2 = 4The professor then pick up your chalk and writes
4 =?perplexed students do not know what to say. Finally, one of them dares to say: Infinity?
That's the difference between mathematics and other sciences. Mathematics has more to do with creativity and the pursuit of beauty in science and mathematics.
